Gourley

The Gourley family had spent the entire summer of 1856 in the Iowa Campground.  The older boys and their father did much of the carpentering (Pg. 72).  The family was from Scotland and had longed to join with the saints for a number of years.  When they were finally able to come to America, they were asked to participate in the “Cart Building Mission.”  This they readily accepted.  However, it put them with the last handcart group, the Martin Company.   The two older boys got jobs as teamsters with the Hodgett Company, thus the family was separated most of their traveling time (Pg. 145).   Two infants, one nine months and one less than a month, died and were buried beside the trail (Pgs. 110, 233 &239) with the heart-broken family and sorrowful members of the company moving on in spite of the grief and suffering that hoovered inside each of them.  After entering the Valley, the family lived for two months in Lehi as they recouped their strength.  A short stay in Eureka followed before settling in Goshen.  Paul worked on the Salt Lake Temple as a carpenter and served in many other capacities as well until his death at 77.  Ellison “Endured with a gentle spirit,” even though a third child died nearly six months after their entrance into the Valley.  (Pg. 311-2)

(Sidney Teeples was a member of the Rescue Team and they had actually talked to each other but they did not make the connection until years after their marriage.)
