Almon Babbitt

Almon Babbitt

Unrelated to the Martin Handcart Company but still having an effect on the members of the Company is the story of Almon Whiting Babbitt, the Secretary of the Utah Territory.  He caught up with the Martin Company on August 26th while still within sight of Florence, Nebraska.   His wagon train contained essential items slated to be used in the territorial building in Fillmore, Utah.  He presented quite an imposing figure in his brand new corduroy pants, superb woolen overshirt, and fine felt hat.  He was in a hurry and did not want to travel with the slow handcarters spurning the warnings of the seasoned brethren about traveling alone as there had been reports of Indian depredations quite recently.
His introduction to the Company and the list of his special items can be found on page 133.
On page 134 the reader will find out what he offered the handcarters and who took advantage of his kind offer.
The disasters that followed these ill-advised decisions are found on page 147, the ramifications of these events are on pages 154-8, 165, 168-9, and the impact it had which eventually fueled the Utah War are on pages 321-2.
